Unlike many of their ancestors who lived in more standardized environments, modern Jews can choose whether to sustain their religious identities and how they do so. This course will explore those choices -- the wide range of religious movements, personalities, and theologies that have emerged over the past two centuries that seek to respond to the novel realities of modern and contemporary times.
