In addition to providing students with a link to information about disability services (http://disabilityservices.rutgers.edu/), you may wish to mention in the first class – in a sensitive manner – that the university respects the rights of students with disabilities and that anyone in class who has received permission to take untimed exams or any other special procedure should contact you privately, but as soon as possible. This way you will be able to make the appropriate arrangements for those students before it is too late. Often students wait, either out of embarrassment or disorganization, to inform professors of their special needs. The Learning Center no longer provides proctors for exams, so if a student needs to take an exam outside of class time, you are responsible for either proctoring the exam yourself or for finding a proctor. It is good to be able to prepare for this contingency and any related issues early in the semester.
