Focus on Israel

Israel Studies is a special area of academic strength at Rutgers University. The Department of Jewish Studies has several faculty members whose area of expertise is Israeli history, society, culture, and politics. These professors have held leadership positions in international academic associations and have been recognized nationally and internationally for their scholarship.

The Department of Jewish Studies offers a wide range of courses on the social, cultural, religious, and political life in Israel, the history of Zionism, and the role Israel plays in the Middle East. In addition, the Department offers Hebrew language courses, ranging from the elementary level to more advanced literature courses in Hebrew. Several Jewish Studies graduates have pursued advanced degrees in History, Political Science, and the Middle East with a focus on Israel.

The Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life regularly offers public programs on various aspects of Israeli history, culture and politics. Each year, the Bildner Center brings visiting scholars from Israel to Rutgers to enhance its academic curriculum and enrich the scope of its public programs.
