The Master Teacher Institute (MTI) in Holocaust Education is a two-year study program to develop expert teachers in Holocaust studies, who would serve as resource providers in their schools, districts, and communities. The MTI will engage teachers in a wide-ranging study of the history of the Holocaust and its remembrance and will address the complex methodological issues involved in teaching about this subject area, including:

  • How to teach the Holocaust with primary documents.
  • How to teach Holocaust literature.
  • How to teach the Holocaust with film, photography, art, and other media
  • How to prepare students for visits to Holocaust museums and other forms of public commemoration.
  • How to teach about the Holocaust within the broader framework of other genocides, prejudice and intolerance.

Teachers will meet approximately once a month during the course of the school year. A maximum of 3 meetings will take place during the school day; the remaining sessions will be scheduled in the late afternoon and evening. Each session will offer presentations by leading scholars in the field of Holocaust studies, supplemented by discussions with experienced educators in order to facilitate group discussions on pedagogical approaches to this difficult subject. The program will include guided trips to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C and the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York.

In order to enhance the commitment and support of the schools chosen for this project, a tiered-team approach will be utilized, involving top school administrators and supervisory staff. The school administrators will be invited to participate along with the teachers in the opening and closing programs and will receive updates throughout the course of the institute.

During the two-year program teachers will create educational programs for their schools and districts based on their learning experiences. Teachers will have ongoing support and access to faculty and resources at Rutgers University throughout the program and as they develop curricula in their schools.

Participating teachers will receive
  • Resource materials for classroom use and personal enrichment.
  • Access to leading scholars of Holocaust history and Holocaust representation.
  • Assistance in curriculum development from experts in Holocaust pedagogy.
  • Educational materials including videos and curriculum guides
  • Staff-led tours of Holocaust museums in Washington DC and New York City.
  • Professional Development credits granted; Graduate credit option available
