RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research focuses on the encounter between Jews and their Middle Eastern neighbors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As an intellectual-cultural historian, I am especially interested in the roles that ideas of religion, secularism, race, and nation played in this encounter and in how these ideas were transformed as they were transported between Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. I also have a strong interest in the study of translation as a tool of understanding, misunderstanding, apologetics, and polemics in the modern Middle East.
